BOULDERING EXPEDITION

An invitation to recce the first ever organised bouldering trip across Oman.
This trip is the exploratory road trip for a future guided bouldering experiences with Haraka Baraka. We’ll be testing boulder problems, as well as logistics and accommodations. Attendees should, therefore, have a level of flexibility and open mindedness.

ITINERARY
Highlights include:
Exploring Oman’s first class bouldering hidden deep in the Wadi’s across the Al Hajar Mountains
Interact and learn about local life in rural Oman; be that Bedouins in the desert or the Wadi guides deep in the mountains
Enjoy two nights camping in Umq Beer / the Valley of the Giants; home to some of the world’s most secluded and exciting bouldering problems

Arrive Seeb Int. Airport (Oman air flight)
Sleep first night in Muscat
Relax, eat, sleep. Recover from travel
1st night -
No alarms in morning (jetlag reset) & Brunch at 11am.
Mini bus to afternoon activity’s starting location within Muscat / old town for 1pm
Walk / scramble / swim (3 hours)
Once completed, go back to accommodation shower and get ready for an early dinner / briefing of the trip
Sleep / personal time for jet lag and travel recovery
2nd night

Leaving mid-morning (9-10 am) from Muscat
Drive down the coast towards Bimmah Sinkhole (1.5 - 2 hours)
Arriving around 11:30 am - 12:00 pm, enjoy sinkhole for a swim / climb / picnic
Once completed, leave around 1:00 pm to continue journey into the mountains towards Umq Beer / Valley of Giants
Road is 50 km (rough terrain) expected time could be anywhere from 2 hours to 4 hours (TBD)
Once arrived, enjoy climbing and set up camp for a 2 night stint.
3rd night

Exploring over 70 set boulder problems within the Valley of the Giants (VoG)
All day climbing within the Valley, with problems ranging from V0 to V9
Swimming in the Wadi’s natural rock pools
Food to be supplied through a chef during this time
Camping in the valley
4th night

Leave late-morning / mid day 12:00 pm from Umq Beer (VoG) to Sur / Wadi Hawer
Climb most part of the morning
Leave Umq Beer (VoG) to arrive in Sur for late lunch at Zaki restaurant
Drive can be again from 2 hours to 4 hours (TBD)
Once in Sur, enjoy a tea and the coastal scenery of the late afternoon after Zaki restaurant
As sun starts to set make way to Wadi Hawer
Drive is around 1.5 hours
Arriving at our hotel in Wadi Hawer as darkness sets in
5th night

Spend full day in Wadi Hawer
Wake up to complete the total Wadi Hawer hike to Sayq
8 hour hike / scramble / climb / swim
Finish hike and go to have a local dinner with a local family in the village of Hawer
Sleep in the same hotel as the night before
6th night -
Leave midday 2 pm onwards towards Biddiyah
Morning spent exploring the nearby Wadi’s opportunities for deep water soloing & bouldering
Head towards Biddiyah to watch the sunset in the dunes & enjoy some sandboarding
This drive is around 45 mins - 1 hour
Post sunset in dunes drive to hotel in Ibra
1 hour drive
7th night

Spend morning in Ibra and the afternoon in Wadi Sa’al and then evening in Qurum
Enjoy Ibra in the Old Town inc. breakfast on a farm
Leave Ibra around 10 am towards Wadi Sa’al
Drive is around 1 hour and 30 mins - 1 hour and 45 mins
Climb from midday onwards in Wadi Sa’al until the evening
Leave to Muscat for final dinner at Ramssa
Drive is around 45 mins
Conclude trip in Muscat
8th night

Breakfast together in Muscat.
Flight logistics to sorted ahead of time i.e taxi’s
30-45 mins from Qurum to Seeb airport (assuming no traffic)
Valley of the Giants
The highlight of the Omani Bouldering Expedition is the climbing world’s hidden gem; the Valley of the Giants. It is nestled in the Eastern Hajar mountain range, approximatly five hours drive from civilisation and home to a remote and ancient Omani village.
With boulder problems ranging from V0 to V9, the valley earns its name with huge limestone boulders from about 4m to 18m tall at the base of 400m walls, and impressive rock wells to dive into.

Late March in Oman is the end of the winter season and will mean an average temperature of 26ºC.
Note that bouldering is typically done in the Wadi’s (mountain valley’s) and as a result is typically cooler and shaded from. the sun.
