Why the Atlas Mountains Feel So Different

“When we are out running on the trails of the Atlas Mountains, there is an immediate peace and freedom unlike I have ever felt before”

Much like urban planners who design pockets of calmness in cities for ‘urban refuge’, it almost feels intential to have Imlil valley only an hour away from the crazyness of Marrakech. Our perception as humans is always relative and it is so dramatic precisley because the contrast is so immediate.

Despite being so close to the ancient city, life in the Atlas Mountains still moves slower and in harmony with the seasons. These mountains have long been home to the Amazigh people, whose culture has shaped life here for thousands of years. Villages remain connected by footpaths, terraces climb the hillsides, and daily life follows rhythms that haven’t changed all that much over generations. The mountains aren’t just scenery - they’re home.

So maybe it’s the lack of phone signal, the proximity to Marrakesh, or the locals cheering you on (“yallah”) as they let you pass on the mountain trails.

But we do know for sure is that the feeling of peace and freedom (as well as the broad smile on our faces) when we are trail running doesn’t come by accident.
