Twists & Turns: First Bouldering trip in Oman
As with most things, timing and place always have a dramatic way of shaping and changing the route forward. This was especially true for our first bouldering trip in Oman. Leading up to the trip, many factors started to come into play, shifting perceptions and confidence; but none shook the plans more than the weather that followed during the trip. Oman is typically what you’d imagine in terms of weather - dry, sunny, and definitely on the warmer side in late March, making it ideal for bouldering. However, what we were greeted with was almost eight straight days of rain that soaked the entire country to its core.
As mentioned above, timing and place always have a dramatic way of shaping your experience. Though unstoppable, this simple fact of life often carries good news, even despite the sometimes overwhelming negative view that comes with it -especially when on a guided bouldering trip in Oman.
Rain in Oman is a very unique and special time. Anyone who has spent enough time in such a dry country will understand the sense of surprise and joy in watching your home become dark, gloomy, and undoubtedly quite magnificent in a different shade. What this did for the trip was give everyone an extremely rare and special view of Oman and its landscapes, touched by water - something few experience on a typical Omani holiday. Even for myself, I saw things I had never seen before in my home country.
In the end, all this trip really showed us is how Oman will always do the talking - no matter the weather, timing, or place. The trip changed dramatically from the initial plan, and while it might have made sense to postpone, we committed - and Oman, as usual, delivered, sharing special moments we would have never experienced.
